Volumetric response of coal matrix to water vapour were measured accurately and continuously Experiments demonstrate anisotropic swelling/shrinkage with the largest strains occurring normal to bedding The sample size strongly influence swelling kinetics, but not equilibrium swelling strain Equilibrium volumetric swelling strains show a near-linear dependence on relative humidity Decreasing in-situ water activity might be a promising strategy for (E)CBM production
