Information provision during BRCA1/2 genetic counseling is complex. Genetic counseling is expected to improve psychological outcomes. Genetic knowledge was assessed in counselees affected with breast cancer. Higher genetic knowledge increased distress in women overestimating their risk. These counselees need help interpreting genetic knowledge.
