A combination of XPS and NMR is adopted for analyzing char chemical structures during superfine pulverized coal pyrolysis. The chemisorbed NO can be transformed into pyridine N with the favor of adjacent oxygenated groups in chars. Particle size has significant influence on oxygen-containing configurations in chars.
