A multiscale flux basis algorithm for the coupled Stokes–Darcy problem is developed. The algorithm is more efficient than the original MMMFEM implementation. Only fixed number of local fine grid solves are required. Gain in efficiency increases with problem complexity. The algorithm can improve the efficiency of the balancing preconditioner in Darcy.
