Practical limitations of single particle ICP-MS in the determination of nanoparticle size distributions and dissolution: case of rare earth oxides

Dissolved La3+ is strongly adsorbed by container walls and the SP-ICP-MS sampling system. Adsorption was higher for fluorinated ethylene (FEP) than for polypropylene (PP). Adsorption of La2O3 nanoparticles was negligible. Particle size distributions were reliably measured by eliminating dissolved metal. Dissolved metal was quantified using a modified protocol based upon mass balances.
