In order to identify the critical conditions for demagnetization of the magnetic layered disk, a coupled temperature-displacement finite element analysis of a textured surface disk in contact against a head was conducted, so as to simultaneously investigate the temperature and stress distribution of the disk. The flash temperature rise and stress in the magnetic layered disk increasing with contact distance were calculated. Furthermore, the influences on the maximum temperature rise and stress due to the velocity, the head pressure, the frictional coefficient, and the surface texture were examined. Consequently, the demagnetization map for the identification of demagnetization of magnetic layered disk was developed based upon the simulation results in conjunction with available data for the demagnetization temperature and stress.
