Chronic caffeine decreased activity, increased anxiety and had no effect on spatial memory. Acute caffeine in caffeine-naïve rats increased activity and may have reduced anxiety. Acute caffeine had similar effects on caffeine-exposed rats to those for naïve rats. Some acute effects on caffeine-exposed rats may have involved withdrawal reversal. Some chronic and acute caffeine effects depended on the rats sex.
