An index to evaluate the efficiency of CO2 emissions from energy intensive industries in China is formed. The index is called Metafrontier Malmquist CO2 Emissions Performance Index (MMCPI). The index is decomposed into several components to explain the change of it in more detail. CO2 emissions reduction potential in China’s energy intensive industries is further calculated.
