An exposed epitope on the surface of virulent strains of Haemophilus parasuis was identified. This epitope is located in the carboxy terminal part of the passenger domain of the virulence-associated trimeric autotransporters, VtaAs, of virulent H. parasuis. Sera from pigs vaccinated with the complete passenger domain of VtaA9 and from convalescent pigs did not react with the epitope.
