A cross-fostering design was used to study strain differences in play. F344 dams exhibit less licking and grooming of pups than LEW dams. Cross-fostered F344 rats were still less playful than LEW rats. Effects of cross-fostering were sensitive to motivational state. Strain differences in anxiety could not easily account for differences in play.
