Buprenorphine is the opioid analgesic most commonly used in laboratory mice. In this study oral and oral/injection protocols were compared for reliability. Water intake was not decreased due to buprenorphine treatment or surgery. Administering buprenorphine solely via drinking water may be unreliable. For continuous therapeutic drug supply a combination with injections is recommended.
