A refined biological soil crust community types was distinguished in Shapotou region. Pigments and carbon fixation varied significantly among the different crust types. Prokaryotic and eukaryotic photoautotrophs have significant fluorescence difference. Original fluorescence provides a convenient monitoring for early crust development. Our classification better assesses crust photosynthetic performance in an ecosystem.
