It is confirmed that K+ presents a marked impact on γ-PGA production.

K+ can effectively increase γ-PGA yield and reduce broth viscosity.

The D-/L-glutamate ratio and Mw of γ-PGA are regulated by K+.

Enhanced GDH, GOGAT, GLR and pgsB are important to improve the γ-PGA yield.

Provide a potential simple control strategy for γ-PGA production.
