Ru/Ca(OH)2 exhibited higher yield to glycols than Ru/Al2O3 in presence of Ca(OH)2.

An intimate contact between the Ru species and the basic promoter is relevant.

A promoting effect is shown by nickel incorporation to Ru/Ca(OH)2.

The solubility of the basic support during the reaction progress is observed.

Catalyst stability is improved by resetting the amount of support solubilized.
