Parallel labeling experiments were applied to measure precise metabolic fluxes in E. coli. Glucose and xylose metabolism was quantified during aerobic and anaerobic growth. During anaerobic growth, TCA cycle is bifurcated and oxidative PPP flux is reduced. During anaerobic growth, biomass turnover produces CO2 for anaplerosis. β-oxidation is required for anaerobic growth on xylose.
