Molybdenite flotation in seawater is depressed by precipitating magnesium hydroxide over the pH range 9.5–10.5. Sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) is shown to restore molybdenite flotation in this pH range. Pyrite flotation, depressed when pH > 10.5, is not restored by SHMP. The use of SHMP can be a suitable alternative in the flotation in seawater of Cu-Mo sulfide ores that require the use of lime to depress pyrite.
