Mitigation of geomagnetically induced currents (GIC) using controlled grounding resistor.
The proposed method is preferred over the conventional fixed-capacitor method in the following ways:.
GIC suppression to a lower level.
As opposed to the capacitive grounding, its response is linear and does not charge and discharge into the system.
The proposed method is less complex in construction and cheaper than conventional fixed-capacitor method.
The proposed method also suppresses zero sequence currents, thus, limit unsymmetrical fault currents.
