We investigated whether urbanized beaches affect surf zone fish community. Fish richness and abundance was significantly lower in high tourist pressure areas. Visitors’ abundance and macrofaunal prey density show a negative association. Dispersion of recreational activities is an important mitigation action. Commercial surf zone fish should be used as iconic species in management programs.
