Pre-ingestion of hemozoin by RAW 264.7 cells promotes infection by L. donovani. The effect on parasite load is mediated by hemozoin as well as β-hematin. Pre-ingestion of hemozoin neither induces nor inhibits nitric oxide release. Parasite loads in L. donovani-infected THP-1 cells are not affected by hemozoin.
