Developmental neurotoxicity is one of the most prominent off-target toxic risks of insecticides. Several classes of insecticides have been developed, each with neurotoxic side effects. Organochlorines, organophosphates, pyrethroids, carbamates and neonicotinoids each produce developmental neurotoxicity. The goal of new insecticide development is to effectively kill target species with less risk of developmental neurotoxicity.
