3D EIT technique was applied to investigate local gas holdup in an ALR.

Reduction in the uniformity of gas distribution with increasing viscosity is observed.

The highest local interfacial area is found in the riser fully developed flow zone.

kL increases with d32 both in Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid.

Empirical correlations for local gas holdup and kLa are provided.
