After the study and publications by Professor Hallam Leonard Movius and other contributors, in 1989, a multidisciplinary team from the Musxe9;um national d'histoire naturelle Laboratory of Prehistory carried on the investigations related to this site, and obtained results about unpublished material from the very rich collections.
This study presents new results about the assemblage from level 3, in the upper part of abri Pataud stratigraphy, corresponding to final Gravettian (approximately −24 000 years B.P.), or Perigordian VI in the regional chronostratigraphical regional pattern. Following the previous study of tools assemblage (Bricker et David, 1984) the level 3 tools typology is characterised by a high number of microgravettes and truncated burins, the presence of truncated blades, the great importance and diversity of bone tools, and the low number of end-scrappers. All of these typological characteristics correspond to the flint industries and bone tools of Final Gravettian.

The racemization ratios of aspartic acid have been determined in 26 fossil bones. The bones are present in two different sedimentary surroundings: levels (fine deposits with numerous artefacts and fossil bones) and “xe9;boulis” (coarse deposits derived from the neighbouring limestone cliff). Racemization ratios for total aspartic acid have a poor correlation with14C ages (respectivelyr2=0·59 and 0·82 for the two environments) but apparent racemization rates are clearly dependent on the type of deposits (levels: K=4·4×10−6year−1; xe9;boulis: K=9×10−6year−1). Racemization ratios of aspartic acid in a high molecular weight protein fraction (>10,000 Da) correlate much better with14C ages (r2=0·999) for the samples from the levels (k=2·1×10−5year−1). From this regression line we estimate ages for two Aurignacian levels: level 6≈29,560 yearsclass=""charImg"" alt=""image"" title=""image"" height=""10"" width=""17"">and level 9≈30,440 yearsclass=""charImg"" alt=""image"" title=""image"" height=""12"" width=""20"">. It is noteworthy that none of the regression lines intercepts the origin. Racemization of aspartic acid appears to occur only after a delay of many thousands of years. This phenomenon could be the result of a coupling between the degradation of proteins and the racemization of amino acids. cle&_coverDate=11 % 2F30 % 2F1996&_sk=999769993&view=c&wchp=dGLbVzW-zSkzk&md5=cb0355052698e1430d6737f96fcb8b6f&ie=/sdarticle.pdf""> Purchase PDF (224 K) |

Layer 24 contains Aurignacian industries and is constituted by a fine silty-sandy sediment. The faunal remains from layer 24, dominated by Equus asinus, indicate a dry-temperate phase which on the basis of 14C dates, would be identified with the Arcy. Lithic industry contains numerous marginally backed bladelets and microbladelets Dufour like that, in the higher level evolve into a special type (denominated “PA 24 A1”). The early Gravettian occupies the overlying layers 23 and 22 that are rich in rough stones and blocks and contain more or less cold faunal remains (at first dominated by Capra ibex, subsequently Bos primigenius becomes abundant): the 14C dating insert them in a phase between Arcy and Tursac. Lithic industry includes a great number of La Gravette backed points and especially microgravette backed points. Some probable flxe9;chettes are also present but unfortunately they are fragmented. cle&_coverDate=09 % 2F30 % 2F2006&_sk=998899996&view=c&wchp=dGLbVzW-zSkzk&md5=ef06d73b2b886103bdb51a6e8e666b81&ie=/sdarticle.pdf""> Purchase PDF (745 K) |
