Hierarchically porous carbon/Co3O4 nanocomposites (HPCC) are synthesized.

The carbon framework accommodates volume variation during discharge/charge process.

HPCC as an anode material for LIBs showed excellent electrochemical performance.

HPCC exhibited capacity of 1215 mA h g−1 after 100 cycles at 100 mA g−1.
