First study on removal of aqueous mercury by a novel graphene oxide/Fe-Mn composite.

Fe-Mn impregnated onto GO through oxygen-containing groups and π-π interactions.

The composite removed mercury mainly by ligand exchange and surface complexation.

The composite significantly reduced the bioavailability of mercury.
