Phosphoinositide 3-kinase γ (PI3Kγ) expression is induced to in response to lipopolysaccharide (LPS). LPS activates PI3Kγ as demonstrated by induction of PIP3 und activation of protein kinase B (AKT). PI3Kγ is acting as a mediator of macrophage phagocytosis. The PI3Kγ protein has a lipid-kinase independent role on phagocytosis. PI3Kγ protein mediated suppression of cAMP signalling is critical for efficient phagocytosis of macrophages.
