This study represents the first detailed taphonomic assessment of diploporite “cystoids”.

Preservation of articulated thecae is the result of more than simple rapid burial.

Geopetal indicators indicate episodes of exhumation and reorientation.

Early cementation of infilling sediment was significant in controlling preservation.

Diploporites are likely more resistant to disarticulation than previously thought.
