Industry employees believed that commercial fishing and habitat loss were the greatest threats to recreational fishes. Perceived threats to angled fish during capture, handling, and release were diverse and inconsistent with evidence from scientific studies. Respondents believed that anglers obtain conservation information from direct peer-to-peer interactions, social media, and fishing magazines. Industry representatives believed that the industry’s role in recreational fisheries conservation is to convey best practices. Communication of accurate information on conservation best practices to the fishing industry could influence the social norms of anglers.
