Syntheses, crystal structures and vibrational properties of Rb4Si4S10 and Rb4Si4Se10

The new thiosilicate Rb4Si4S10 (C2/c, a=15.106(4), b=15.164(2), c=9.031(1) Å, β=105.67(3)°, Z=4) was prepared from rubidium sulfide, silicon and sulfur in solid state reactions at 800°C. In a similar way crystals of Rb4Si4Se10 (C2/c, a=15.846(3), b=15.872(3), c=9.325(2) Å, β=105.63(3)°, Z=4) were obtained from reactions at 800°C using rubidium selenide, silicon and selenium as starting materials. Structural data for the two isotypic phases were obtained from single crystal X-ray diffraction.
