A novel approach is constructed to fabricate new g-C3N4-based copolymers.

Almost all aromatics can be grafted into g-C3N4 networks based on this strategy.

All copolymers show remarkably enhanced photocatalytic H2 evolution performance.

The optimized adding amounts of these aromatics co-monomers is very small.
