In gasifiers, the carbon feedstock typically reacts with oxygen and water to produce synthesis gas. Chromia-free lining materials for gasifiers have to be developed with due consideration to environmental requirements. Novel Al2O3-SiC-C (ASC) refractories were considered in this work. The corrosion resistance of ASC refractories and a conventional Cr2O3-Al2O3-ZrO2 (CAZ) refractory was evaluated in air and in coke bed. Furthermore, the corrosion behavior of ASC and CAZ refractories was simulated by FactSage. The results showed that ASC specimens exhibited better slag penetration and corrosion resistance than CAZ one in air and coke bed, which was ascribed to the fact that: 1) the presence of carbon, such as flake graphite increased the wetting angle of slag on ASC specimens; 2) the addition of flake graphite and the reduction of Fe2O3 in the slag increased the viscosity of the slag; 3) in-situ formed SiC whiskers in ASC specimens could not only form the bonding system but also promote the microporous structure to hinder the slag penetration into ASC specimens.
