High precision direct mass measurements have shown strong potential to identify and determine new nuclear isomeric states, and therefore to add intriguing new nuclear physics information by going beyond γ-ray spectroscopy. The principle and characteristic experimental results of isomer investigations in the storage ring at GSI are discussed.
