Limiting factors which inhibit Al diffusion in air on magnesium alloy is investigated. The formation of an MgO film on alloy surface is argued to be a main limiting factor. Diffusion temperature and diffusion time affect the thickness of the MgO film. Formation of MgO could cause weight loss and crack initiation of the specimen. Repeated diffusion after elimination of the MgO film allows a whole coating to form.
