Failure analysis of hot extrusion die based on dimensional metrology, micro-characterization and numerical simulation — A case study of Ti alloy parts

The 2D and 3D local geometric deviations of die cavity were compared to indicate the macro damage zones of die cavity. The black oxide residues, surface oxide layer and wear craters were found and explained. A thermal mechanical model was used to simulate the deformation, the forming load, die temperature and die stress. The local micro-plastic deformation was found and confirmed through microstructures and simulation results.
