Although the ratio of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; n-3 PUFA) to arachidonic acid (AA; n-6 PUFA) has recently been recognized as a risk marker of cardiovascular disease, the prognostic impact of the EPA/AA ratio on patients with heart failure (HF) remains unclear. In this study, HF patients with a lower circulating EPA/AA ratio exhibited higher cardiac mortality than in HF patients with a higher EPA/AA ratio. The impact of EPA/AA ratio on cardiac mortality was more pronounced among patients taking statins than in those not taking statins.
