A hybrid freeze casting-space holder method is presented which for the first time produces up to 68% porosity for alumina-zirconia ceramics. The effects of nanoadditives, SiC, SiO2, and CNTs on the strength of these highly porous ceramics were investigated. By using 20% space-holder materials and 15% SiC nanoparticles, the density decreased by 33.8%, while maintaining a compressive strength of 132.5 MPa and porosity of 43.4%.
