A ctnE disruptant had been obtained through homologous recombination method. The △ctnE has notably reduced the citrinin production by 96% in Monascus aurantiacus. The △ctnE has markedly increased the pigment production by 40% in M. aurantiacus. The role of ctnE gene in citrinin biosynthesis has been confirmed.
