The term normocytic anemia is usually used to identify those arregenerative anemias with a MCV between 80 and 100 fl, generally related to a heterogeneous group of chronic disorders such as hepatopathy, renal insufficiency, autoimmune disorders, endocrinopathies, neoplasias, and chronic infections, in which several etiopatogenic mechanisms are involved, like an abnormal use of the organism iron or a deficient production of erythropoietin. The diferential diagnosis is frequently complicated as many of these patients often have an anemia of mixed etiology. Also, a number of anemias typically microcytic (like iron deficiency anemia) or macrocytic (like regenerative anemias) may appear with a normal MCV at the beginning. Treatment is based on the therapy of the underlying disease and frequently requires the administration of erythropoietin.
