Summary
The joint consensus conference of the French Language Resuscitation Society (SRLF) and the French Society of Anesthesia and Intensive Care (SFAR) held in 2007 recommends the use of a sedation protocol to be developed in collaboration with the whole care-giving team. We briefly describe the therapeutic strategies and tools for evaluating sedation and analgesia, as well as the main steps to be taken to implement a sedation protocol in critical care. After the care-giving team noticed shortcomings in sedation practices, we formed a working group composed of nurses, nurses’ aides, a chief nurse and physicians, who together wrote a sedation protocol. Before implementation, the applicability of the protocol was tested, and its clinical impact on patient outcome was evaluated. The main message coming out from this experience is that communication within the care-giving team is essential. In addition, it is necessary to update the protocol regularly in order for it to be sustained.
