文摘

Migrants' timing of nocturnal departure affects speed of migration and thus fitness.

We caged migrants at stopover to measure start of nocturnal migratory restlessness.

Start of migratory restlessness is a good proxy for actual nocturnal departure time.

The more fuel a bird accumulated the more it advanced its start of restlessness.

Our study indicates that refuelling dynamics affects nocturnal timing of migration.
