Distortion products (DPs) can be produced by cochlear nonlinearities.
DPs are also produced by the Sensimetrics earphones commonly used in fMRI studies.
Earphone DPs can be high in amplitude, and can alter cortical pitch responses.
Cochlear DPs had lower amplitudes, and a smaller effect on cortical responses.
Stimuli are introduced that localize pitch-responsive areas while minimizing DPs.
