In this paper, local deformation and buckling of a cylindrical Al tube under impulsive pressure is discussed. To give a local shock load, five kinds of mandrels were inserted into the tube. The mandrel has an axial length of 50 mm and a V-shaped groove in the axial direction of the groove angle of 45, 90, 120, 150 and 180°. The tube was freely deformed into the groove by applying external magnetic pressure produced by an electromagnetic forming device. The condenser capacity of the electromagnetic forming device had a constant value of 400 μF and the discharging energy of the device, which was the origin of the shock load acting on the cylindrical tube, was controlled by the charging voltage of the condenser. The deformation process was recorded by a high-speed camera and the deformation behavior was analyzed using the finite-element method.
