Creates a framework to analyse the determinants of citation impact at country level. Reveals a recent convergence trend in scientific capabilities between South and North. Displays a U-shaped relationship between research citation impact and GDPpc. Shows that previous performance and international collaboration are critical for higher impact. Finds that scientific specialization is more relevant in the South than in the North.
