Mooring observations of the near-inertial wave wake of Hurricane Ida (2009)

Near-inertial kinetic energy is enhanced offshoreward and to the right of the storm-track. Hurricane-induced waves with vertical wavelength of 1000 m propagate poleward at 23–28 km/day and downward at 57–70 m/day. The 7–9% of the maximum local wind power input to near-inertial oscillations is transferred below the thermocline. Vorticity trapping and kinetic-energy amplification occur at a critical layer below a region of anticyclonic vorticity.
