Molecular composition of healthy/osteoporotic murine cortical bone was examined. No significant amorphization in mineral apatite was found in its diseased state. Complex off-stoichiometry variations in bony hydroxyapatite were detected. A fundamental role for collagen quality on bone embrittlement was recognized.
