Role of sulfide in bio-uptake of Co and Ni during anaerobic digestion was assessed. Prevailing sulfidic conditions restrict accessibility of metals for microorganisms. Sulfidic conditions do not essentially prevent metal acquisition by microorganisms. Enhanced dissolution of CoS(s) was observed during anaerobic digestion. Relative S to Fe content regulates chemical speciation and bio-uptake of Co and Ni.
