The billet diameter affects the microstructure/properties of extruded Mg alloys.

A decrease in billet diameter increases the strain rate induced during extrusion.

A higher strain rate promotes dynamic recrystallization/precipitation behavior.

The resulting grain refinement and increase in precipitates improve the strength.

This size effect is more pronounced in AZ91 alloy than in AZ61 alloy.
