Two different methods for constructing Markov matrices to propagate contaminants at large Courant numbers are established. A methodology for calculating effective, time varying, source terms at large time steps is developed. Markov methods are extended to time varying (transient) flow fields. The large Courant Markov methods are shown to be 1 to 2 orders of magnitude faster than standard PDE methods. Comparisons using several validated examples illustrate the utility of this method for contaminant spread modeling.
