A finite element model (FEM) was developed and validated for the behavior of defective thermal protections. The model was applied to thermal protections of hazardous material tankers. Key performance indicators (KPIs) were defined to assess thermal protection performance. The influence of typical defect sizes on protection performance was investigated. Application of KPIs to support inspection-based maintenance of coatings was addressed.
