We estimate the profit maximizing size of PV systems including economies of scale. We find that tariffs and subsidies can lead to incentives for small systems (<5 kW). The results are related to a social cost perspective of PV integration. Potential cost inefficiencies are identified and quantified for Austria. We recommend policies incentivizing larger PV systems in the residential sector.
