The Mediterranean Sea is likely a center of diversity and the site of origin for the colonial tunicate B. schlosseri. Using COI marker, 4 clades and 2 inbreeding operational taxonomic units were found. We recorded high genetic difference between western/eastern Mediterranean basins. Mediterranean and Scandinavian populations are probably genetically connected.
